Turbidity Curtains

Ponds, Streams & Creeks

SedCatch® manufactures turbidity curtains for work in and around ponds, streams, and creeks.

How to Order

We will advise and supply you with the best solution for your application.  The information we need to know is:

  1. The length of the turbidity curtain across the water.
  2. The expected maximum depth of the water. Don’t forget about storm events.
  3. The velocity of the water in the stream or creek.
  4. The expected wave height in a lake.

Other Uses for Turbidity Curtains

Substitute for Baffles in a Sediment Basin

Turbidity Curtains can also be used as a substitute for baffles in a sediment basin. Baffles are normally specified for the following reasons:

  • The distance between the inlet and outlet is closer than it should be for effective sediment removal. Most sediment basins are designed for detention, and then adapted for sediment removal. Oftentimes baffles will be installed to increase the effective length of the sediment basin. A turbidity curtain can be used for the same purpose with less installation costs, maintenance, and restoration costs.
  • The sediment basin is too square. Once again, a turbidity curtain can be used to increase the effective length of the sediment basin.
  • The sediment basin is too deep. The shallower a sediment basin, the more effective it will be. The key is having stagnant water where the smallest particle has an opportunity to settle to the bottom. If a particle only makes it ¾ of the way down and the wind or inflow agitates the water, it has to start all over again. Several turbidity curtains strung across a sediment basin can reduce the effect of wind and currents and increase the effectiveness of the basin.

Substitute for Silt Fence in Swampy or Marshy Areas

Turbidity Curtains can also be used as a substitute for silt fence in swampy or marshy areas. They offer the following advantages:

  1. They do not require equipment to be placed on soft soil.
  2. They are relatively unaffected by rising floodwater which could damage silt fence, especially from currents to the back side of the silt fence.
  3. Inspectors will be quick for approvals because they acknowledge the effectiveness of turbidity curtains over silt fence.
